What is kinesiology?

Great question!  I get asked this a lot - although not as often as I used to which tells me more and more people know about this great modality.

When you break down the word ‘kinesiology’, it means ‘the study of movement’.  ‘Kinesi-’ is from the word kinetics meaning motion or movement, and ‘-ology’ is ‘the study of’.

Kinesiology looks at the relationship between stress and how it’s affecting ‘movement’ within all aspects of you.  By ‘all aspects of you’, I mean that stress can affect the flow of your thoughts and emotions, your connection with yourself and others, the flow of your digestion, menstruation, breathing, bodily fluids (blood, lymph), and physical coordination and movement.  On the other hand, when you are feeling physically, mentally, or emotionally unwell - it can create stress in you.  For example sometimes a headache is because you’re mentally and emotionally stressed and other times you may be mentally and emotionally stressed because you have a headache.

In a kinesiology session, I start by taking a full health history because it gives me a picture of how your body has responded to stress throughout your life, for example maybe you’re a person who has always had headaches or lower back pain, or stomach upsets, or picked up every cold that was going around, or injured yourself through strained muscles.  Each of these things tells me something because I map your health history to qualities of the five elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine which brings together physical and emotional responses that may seem totally unrelated when viewed from a Western medicine perspective.  From there, I work with my client through acupressure points, muscle movements, and a technique called muscle monitoring which is a way of having a conversation with the body so you can become aware of held stress that’s relevant to whatever you’ve come into the clinic for.  When you have awareness of all the connecting parts of the stress, you can gain an understanding of them and move towards balancing that stress. Your session may also include aromatherapy, reiki, and flower essences.

If you would like to know more about kinesiology and whether it might help you, book in for a free 20-minute chat and we can talk some more.
